Meet the Slots Creators – Turbo Games’s Vadim Potapenko Interview

Tell us a bit about yourself. What makes you, you; and why have you chosen to work at Turbo Games?

Sure, I’m more than 8 years in the iGaming business and really like this industry. Otherwise, why would I do this for so many years? :) To be honest, I was super glad to join TurboGames, since I met the team, saw the product and vision - and realized that it’s an opportunity that I should take.

We love big wins, so can you please let us know the top 3 winnings ever paid by Turbo Games?

You have an impressive game portfolio, can you name the best three of them ever released by Turbo Games?

Yeap, my top 3 will be Mines, Fury Stairs, DiceTwice. Of course, I like our latest release of Ball&Ball game but my real favorite will be our future game. I can say that its context is the latest events in the world, keep following @TurboGames and experience on your own.

2021 was a challenging year for all of us. Even so, Turbo Games had multiple releases. Which slot takes the 2021 title of the best Turbo Games release?

Compared to the events that are taking place now in our Homeland Ukraine because of the russian bloody invasion, 2021 - was the prime time for all of us, for the country and even for the world. We keep doing our best to grow and develop the company even in such unstable times when every minute is a gift.

As Turbo Games was launched in the beginning of 2021, so, the previous year was a successful start for us. I would nominate the first game Crash as the best TurboGames release because of its growing demand from the very beginning until now.

Looking to the future, what is the next big release Turbo Games is planning?

As I said, we have been developing a special game based on the context of the Russian war, other details can be discussed after its release. Furthermore, we have a tight pipeline for upcoming games until the end of year. So I can guarantee there will be a game for everyone.

In a market with hundreds of game studios, what would you say is TurboGame’s biggest differentiator?

We bring something new to the iGaming assortment: minimalistic themes and something that everyone knows from their childhood - casual games. And if we are talking about numbers, we have more than 15k bets made by one player. It's because of the game theme that has the highest percentage of retention.

How can you tell if an online slot is going to be a hit or not?

You never know. The same principle works for songs or movies. Mostly, results are unexpected. The main rule is - if you have passion, goal and you do your best to create something good that people will enjoy and have fun - then it will be a hit anyway.

Switching our attention to casinos, with so many options out there, can you let us know which are your top 3 casino preferences?

Well, to be honest, I never play to win :) The best game experience is to play for a long time, and the perfect scenario is to have a deposit that I can easily lose, get a proper win streak, up to x8-x10 from a deposit. And after losing it all, as you saw in the movie «The Gambler» with Mark Wahlberg. That’s why I don’t need any «fast withdrawals» or «welcome bonuses» :D

Did you use to play slots before entering the iGaming industry? Can you share with us your biggest win on an online slot?

Something like x400 in Wild Shark (Amatic) and x1200 in Money Train (Relax).

What are your hobbies?

Everything related to cars.

What has been your biggest challenge and your most significant success in the gambling industry?

All these stories are under NDA :) Most important is the new ones that you will see from the company's announcements!

If you weren’t in the gambling industry, what other industry would you want to work in? I can’t even imagine this!

There’s a lot of talk about AI developing at the speed of light and soon taking everyone’s jobs. It doesn’t sound very believable, but still, this resource is now used everywhere, and the game development industry is no exception. Its pace of evolution has been very noticeable in recent years. To understand this issue, we sat down and talked with our art director, Ksenia — here’s her opinion on it:

How do you see AI impacting game design right now?

Right now, I see AI as an incredibly powerful tool for design and illustration. It’s truly a game-changer — it speeds up workflows and lifts the overall quality across the board.

AI is evolving so fast, and I feel like the design standards in our industry are evolving just as quickly alongside it. It feels great to be part of this shift. Honestly, it’s pretty exciting to be working in design right now, while all of this is unfolding.

Can AI replace designers in game dev?

Today, I still see AI as exactly what I said — a tool. A new, powerful, and impressive tool. But still just a tool.

Because of it, though, the role of a designer or artist is definitely changing. We're spending less time on hands-on production and more time shaping ideas into visuals, structuring creative flows, and learning how to translate imagination through prompts.

Here’s the thing: AI-assisted work made by an experienced designer — someone with a trained eye, good taste, and real skills — looks completely different from something generated by someone who just has access to a computer. That’s where we are now.

Looking ahead, though, with how fast AI is advancing, it's very possible that in just a year we'll be creating things far more impressive than what we can do now — faster and easier. But the design profession itself won’t disappear — it’ll just evolve. Whether we’ll still need massive in-house design teams like we did 10 years ago... that’s another question.

So, to answer your question — replace designers? No. Change the role? Absolutely.

How do you think AI will change the igaming industry in the next 2–3 years?

In the next couple of years, AI is going to transform everything. The world won’t look the way it does today — and iGaming is no exception.

What exactly will change? That’s a question for futurists. But one thing’s for sure — it won’t be boring.

Does AI lower the barrier to entry?

Honestly, I wouldn’t say the barrier to entry has changed all that much.

Sure, we’re using AI at nearly every stage of our work now. But that hasn’t made us significantly "cooler" than our competitors — because they’re using it too.

What I’m getting at is this: trying to build a new iGaming company from scratch and relying solely on AI to break ahead? That’s just not realistic.

Our industry is built on human emotion, years of hands-on experience, and the hard lessons learned by real professionals. ChatGPT can simulate understanding, but it can’t actually live or feel any of it. The human experience is something it can only describe on the surface.

So, for any young iGaming studios hoping AI alone will fast-track them to the top... well, I’ve got some bad news.

If every studio uses the same tools, how does a brand stay unique?

That’s where deeper experience and professional judgment really come into play.

We use AI heavily in our team — but with one rule: the result can’t look artificial. It has to feel crafted, like a human made it. And honestly, that takes time. But it’s worth it.

There’s so much AI-generated content out there now that audiences are starting to tune it out. If something was made in one minute — why should anyone care?

That’s why we spend extra time refining details, redrawing, polishing. Our designs take longer because we want to deliver something that actually feels like quality entertainment for our players.

What excites you most about AI, and what new opportunities does it create for games?

What gets me most excited is the speed. The fact that I don't have to grind through complex technical processes anymore – I can just bring ideas to life in the moment. That speed lets designers save their mental energy for what actually matters: being creative.

Here's the thing – back in the day, so many concepts never even made it past a conversation. You'd think of something cool, but then reality would hit: actually building that would take weeks, maybe months. So most ideas just died on the spot.

Now? We can prototype entire worlds and concepts in minutes. And more importantly, we can figure out way faster which ideas are actually worth investing serious development time in, and which ones should probably stay on the drawing board.

In the end, AI is just a tool. It makes things faster and opens more creative possibilities, but real skill, taste, and experience still matter more than ever.

When you stepped into the booth, we didn't want you to just "see" a stand — we wanted you to feel like you were already in the game. Every material and every line was there for a reason, zero fluff.

Did you catch the "Yin and Yang" story? Crossing light and dark themes was a bet that our people would just get it. And they did. It wasn’t just a design choice; it was the physical version of that core tension between risk and reward.

And that holographic wall... it was so "holographic" it basically lit up the entire hall. Some people seriously told us they only found the booth by following the glow. It added this futuristic edge that reacted to every move, but never stole the spotlight from the game itself.

The details tied it all together. You should’ve felt those pillows! Shaping them like Fire, Water, and Earth wasn't just for comfort — it was about making the game mechanics something you could literally grab. Honestly, even the holographic stickers were hard to look away from.

Of course, visuals were only the start.

The Turbo Games crew was there the whole time, ditching the scripts to actually walk partners through the engine and answer real questions about how it all works under the hood.
