8 Stages of Game Development
Turbo Games released more than 40 games and established a sustainable game development cycle over 4 years:
1. Idea The process starts with generating and refining ideas. The team studies competitors, analyzes trends, and pitches concepts. Producers evaluate and prioritize these ideas before approving and assigning tasks.
2. Game Design Document (GDD) The Game Designer develops a detailed document outlining the game’s concept and mechanics. This stage involves collaboration to shape the creative vision into a feasible game through iterative revisions.
3. Backend Development This stage focuses on coding the game’s core functionality and writing necessary documentation. Testing ensures the game operates correctly and meets return-to-player standards.
4. Visual Design Details The visual identity of the game is created, including naming, interface design, graphics, and animations, to make the game appealing and user-friendly.
5. Copywriting & Sound Design Game texts such as rules and instructions are written, and sound elements are produced. These are reviewed to align with the game’s overall design.
6. Frontend Development The initial playable version of the game is built, followed by playtesting and necessary fixes to ensure smooth gameplay and user experience.
7. Pre-Release Promotional materials and presentations are prepared. The game undergoes final tests in a staging environment, and marketing content is developed to support the launch.
8. Release The game is deployed to production, configured in the back office, and undergoes final checks to confirm everything is ready before it goes live.
It should be noted that this is the complete cycle for creating an original game. However, it is possible to develop templates of existing games and make reskins. This process is faster and is a good solution if a certain mechanic has proven to be successful.
